Wind Energy
The idea of harvesting wind energy makes us think of modern technology - wind turbines - when the original uses of it are found far back in history and were much simpler. Around 5000 years ago the Egyptians used wind energy in sail boats and around 4000 years ago they used it to irrigate their crops. During the Dark Ages we saw the introduction of the Windmill, from which a direct relationship to our modern turbines can be traced, the main difference; windmills use energy to crush grain while wind turbines use energy to create electricity.
One of the major advantages of wind energy is that the source is most prevalent during the winter months, which is when energy from the other major renewable energy source is at its lowest, and when the weather is the coldest, asking from more from our heating appliances. Wind turbines are also aesthetically pleasing when compared to other power plants.
Depending on the outdoor space your property has it is very possible to generate most or all of the electricity you need with a medium sized turbine. Of course in more urban areas space issues only allow for smaller turbines, so for best results - and to save space - these can be situated on the roof. One of these in the correct condition should provide enough power to light your house and garden office.
