Wrapped in Nature - Flower Shop Design

By Francesca McGlone on 5th November, 2010

Aktipis, a flower shop in Greece, recently designed by Athens–based architects; Point Supreme has extracted the essence of nature’s artistry and channelled it into a showroom that bursts with life. Taking three months to design and construct, the result is a flower shop that celebrates the curving shapes and tingling detail of nature that in turn, creates a strong sense of identity within the space.

The green and white colour scheme creates a fresh, luscious vibrancy; fourteen white tiled display tables dominate the shop floor, showcasing a gradient of heights and dimensions that highlight the varying shades of green, as well as the unique outlines of each plant. The different heighted tables also mean that each plant can be viewed from an alternative angle, as some plants take advantage of elevated levels, demonstrating the botanical propensity for plants to reach up to the light, as well as the different stages of growth that result in a varied landscape.

Some of the tables have ledges, where multiple plants sit, together with left-over space that mimic the spaces of light created between leaves and branches, leaving portals of space that create an unobstructed view through to the rest of the shop’s layered display. On wider tables showcase bushier plants that sit with their leaves stretching outwards, whereas taller plants stand on lower ledges, reaching waist height while smaller plants are given a podium, so that each species is showcased well. Decorative lizards also crawl across the surface of the tables, helping to emphasise a thriving outdoor environment that attracts life, which is also further enhanced by the sounds of birdsong, played into the space as nature’s soothing soundtrack.

The walls are also covered in a nature print, complete with birds and leafy sweeps of colour that seem to act as an extension of the foliage that sits for sale in pots. Images of birds are printed on the wall, perched and flying within the pattern, which helps to create a real sense of a natural environment, rather than a sterile shop interior. The walls are the perfect backdrop to present each plant to their full potential, almost as if purchasing a plant or flower, as if it were plucked directly form nature. The wallpaper’s organic lines grow upward, reflecting the plants upward reach inside the shop. The wall also displays twisting foliage, as it claims the white walls, which helps to present a forest of fascination on entrance to the shop.

The front door keeps the same fresh white finish upon a reclaimed steel door with a floral filigree pattern that gives a taster of the contents inside. It also fittingly resembles a garden gate that marks the entrance to a botanical haven.

Globular lights hang down in varying lengths, suspending light like the sun. They also mimic the differences within nature’s character. The large front windows of the shop also help to welcome daylight into the space, which is made the most of through the light reflecting base coat of a white interior.

Point Supreme’s flower shop design demonstrates the decorative properties within nature, as well as its flexibility, which is able to soften the rigidity of an interior space with ease. To see the flower shop for your self visit; http://www.iconeye.com/
