Working at Home can be Beneficial to Employers and Employees

By Andrew Tweddle on 15th August, 2011

Recently, on a number of other articles on this site, we have spoken of the benefits of working from home. Numerous studies have been carried out, and all point to working from home, even if it’s just for a few days a week, being very beneficial. These benefits include improvements in your home life, such as more time to spend with the family, financial benefits, like less money spent on commuting, and work benefits, such as a rise in productivity levels.

Another study, carried out by American company Jones Lang Lesalle and the Ethisphere Institute has concluded that a considerably smaller percentage of employees who work from home commit offenses against their company, as opposed to those who work in an office. The study found 36 percent of employees who work in an office committed ‘visible ethic violations’, compared to only 11 percent of those who work from home on a regular basis.

Alex Bringham, executive director at the Ethisphere Institute, said of the findings: “Working from home is still viewed as a positive privilege because it’s still pretty new. In terms of the privilege of working from home, they didn’t want to put it at risk because they didn’t want to get called back into the office.” This shows that home office workers do prefer being at home than being in an office, so they are more honest and hardworking. This honesty and integrity is a show of thanks to their employers for letting them work from home.

This was supported by Mark Ohringer, executive vice president for Jones Lang LaSalle, a real-estate services firm. He said: “Empowering people and treating them like professionals and adults leads to better behavior. If they feel like they’re being treated well and trusted, that’s the treatment they give back to the company.”

This is further evidence to support the growing movement of people choosing to work from home. If you’ve been given the chance to work from home, a Decorated Shed garden office is the perfect space to carry out this work. Each garden office can be made to suit your individual needs and offers a high quality, fully equipped space for you to be a successful home worker.
