Wood-burning stoves in garden buildings

By Steven Willis on 14th December, 2009

Wood-burning stoves are a beautifully atmospheric option for heating your garden building, offering a unique sensory experience all of their own. A well-positioned wood-burning stove can act as the visual centrepiece of a room, as well as the hub around which all activities take place.

Although there may be a general assumption that wood-burning stoves are a little 'retro' and 'rustic' in styling, the reality is that there are many different designs available to suit your own interior look. So whether you're going for a contemporary, minimal or traditional style there's a stove out there that will be a perfect match.

In terms of sustainability and eco-credentials, wood-burning stoves can represent a really positive heating decision for your garden building, depending on where you source your fuel. Using an FSC-accredited supply means that trees have been grown specifically as fuel and are part of a sustainable replanting programme. The CO2 released during burning is equal to that absorbed as the tree itself was growing, which essentially makes it carbon neutral. This type of sustainable fuel is readily available throughout the UK from many suppliers, and costs around the same or even slightly less than oil fuel over the course of a year.

The heating efficiency of a wood-burning stove ranges from around 80% to 85%, and when used within an insulated garden building provides an instant warming effect that lasts.
