Weekly bills of £2 in Glasgow eco homes
By Steven Willis on 22nd March, 2010
The social advantages of eco homes were put into perspective this week with a Glasgow pilot scheme that claims to be able to offer household running costs of just £2 a week. The Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) programme will see four super-efficient three-bedroom semi-detached houses built in Laurieston. The homes are developed with high performance insulation and include passive solar design features that attribute to the ultra low heating and hot water costs.
While environmentally-friendly technologies are often seen as an expensive status symbol, as highlighted by the 'eco bling' debate earlier in the year, the financial savings they offer are clearly beneficial for social housing providers and low income homeowners.
The prototype houses will be completed in May and will then provide an important performance trial, which if successful may see more built in the area and beyond.
"We already provide some of the lowest cost social housing in Glasgow and now we want to provide the best and greenest housing which benefits our tenants and the environment," said GHA's Jim Sneddon. "Fuel poverty is an issue which affects many of our tenants and is one which could escalate, unless alternatives are found."
