Thinking Outside the Box

Thinking Outside the Box

By Matthew Thompson on 9th September, 2010

When modern office design is sometimes discussed, the questions that are normally asked are where will the desks go? What colour walls? How to work the air-conditioning? Rarely do we find a company that asks what material the interior will be made from? A question which a media agency in Amsterdam, 'Nothing', made their number one focus, Aluminium, stainless steel or glass? No they decided to furnish their entire office in cardboard. Everything in their office is sculptured out of strengthened cardboard. An office space created literally out of Nothing.

They have pushed the limit of office design to the edge, by turning a plain, white, empty office into an intricate layout of stairs leading to a podium, a canteen and a seating area. Surely this is the perfect environment for a creative agency, with license to decorate by doodling on the walls. Michael Jansen and Bas Korsten, created the agency, and wanted their office to represent their company ethos of creating something out of nothing.

With their cardboard layout, a normal office has been given an environmental, revolutionary and inventive twist to the standard office scene. However, some employees may be caught finding themselves distracted thinking just how it is all possible. In theory and in practice it is simple. Reinforced cardboard was pre-made to size; ready just to be fitted neatly and easily together, similar to many self build eco-builds today.

The same simplicity can be seen in the design and construction of Decorated Shed’s garden office, with an efficient construction time and contemporary layout. A garden office is just as inspiring to work in as the Nothing Agency office. The spacious, light and modern design betters any office block, and with the background of your garden, makes it a truly inspiring place to work.
