The Emergence of Modern Style – The Garden Studio
By Francesca McGlone on 22nd December, 2010
It is true to say that every culture has a distinct architectural style, influenced by climate, available resources and fashion. Many cities are defined by their architecture, the once lavish lifestyles of Venetians is reflected in an ornate city, while the technologically advanced high population of China is mirrored by skyscrapers packed into a cramped space.
Canada is stereotypically viewed as a conservative nation in terms of its architecture. Its architectural forms are ultimately born from the harsh climate that grips the country. Adverse weather conditions which are thought of mostly as a negative feature can actually produce uniquely beautiful architecture.
Canadian architects are beginning to make their mark. For example, The Wrap House by the Marc Boutin Collective demonstrates how modern architecture manages to create homes that are tailored towards the occupiers needs without compromising on the delivery of a structure with individual character.
Decorated Shed also keep the needs of potential occupants at the forefront of their designs, with the freedom to alter a garden studio’s function as needs evolve over time. The Wrap House is also designed to be able to adapt to the changes over a course of a lifetime. Although initially designed with a single man in mind, with a masculine cube shape and exterior walls made up of dark wood, the building seems perfect embodiment of trendy relaxation. However, it is just as viable as a family home with a spacious light interior that fashionably bucks tradition.
Decorated Shed have a wide range of garden offices and studios can be used as a functional space that corresponds to different stages of life. For example, as a young professional, the space can be used as an office, as a parent a playroom and in retirement a crafts or exercise space. The versatility of the space makes it a useful and long lasting structure.
Another Canadian architecture, Paul Raff has created a building called Cascade House, which is built with the intake of natural light in mind, which has come to the forefront of modern architecture, as an important external and internal feature in terms of aesthetics and functionality. Natural light that pours into a space instantly serves a dose of well-being. The name Cascade House comes from the fact that its front is made of green glass, stacked glass as a source of external beauty and light reflection. The large glass panels that make up many of Canada’s modern buildings makes it possible to take advantage of the country’s spectacular scenery. It shows how the insertion of glass can serve as a beautiful addition. Decorated Shed use this premise as tall, sliced windows grace the walls, panoramic glass doors fold back or continuous glass wraps the entire structure. The available organic beauty outside is framed by windows as art.
