The Ark - Small Spaces exhibition 2010

By Dawn Kubicek on 4th August, 2010
This summer at the V&A London, 7 architects from around the world are designing fixtures and mini buildings showing different and exciting designs through small spaces.
We have already looked at Danny Wicke and his interesting shed feature, but my second favourite is Rintala Eggertsson, an architect from Norway. The Ark is situated at the bottom of some stairs, towering up to the V&A's National Art Library - itself a site of refuge and retreat - this free standing tower re-evaluates the concept of this exhibition.
The tower consists of hundreds of shelves holding hundreds of different books all facing inwards. The books are a mixture of colours and different textures forming a rich collage. A simple idea but in effect makes it an outstanding piece of architecture. In contrast the exterior is dominated by minimalist white with exposed edges.
Distinguished architecture designs show how interior design can enhance small spaces. Decorated Shed build bespoke buildings and offer a range of features to add character to these smaller garden offices or studio structures. Some of our features include internal decoration, kitchens, bathrooms and stoves, but we can advise and help with all interiors to help you get the most out of your space. The simple concept of lighting is also an important factor and can strengthen your building inside and out.
Eggertsson's project focuses on the thoughts in moments of study, meditation and self reflection. The spiral staircase allows viewers to explore the structure, have a look through the books and use the private reading chambers to enjoy their selection.
Showing the use of small spaces is at the heart of this exhibition which is in the essence of every Decorated Shed garden studio or garden annex.
