Sedum Roofing on Garden Buildings

By Steven Willis on 18th July, 2011
The concept of ‘green’ roofing has emerged in recent years, as developers look to increase the environmental qualities of their buildings. As relatively small surfaces, garden buildings are ideal for green roofs.
Sedum is a popular choice for planting on a green roof, delivering a number of outstanding benefits. From a performance perspective, sedum leaves store water, which helps with the irrigation of the building. The plants are hardy, with the ability to survive in most of the weather and climate conditions that we experience here in the UK. Sedum is an incredibly low maintenance plant, requiring little or no attention to grow healthily. Finally, an established sedum bed performs as a heat-insulator for the building, helping to retain a comfortable interior environment and deflect the worst of the outside temperature, whether extremes of hot or cold.
Combined with the warm and natural appearance of wood cladding, sedum roofing helps to create even more of an organic look for the garden building, blending the structure into the surrounding landscape.
