Reducing your Carbon Footprint with a Garden Office

By Emma Heaton on 18th October, 2011
The environment is high up on our list of concerns as problems with climate change worsen. The way we live is having a detrimental effect on our surroundings and will threaten the way that we live in the future. There are small things that can be done in order to improve the issues that we face with climate change. It is going to alter what we grow and the way that we grow it, and furthermore it is going to make our gardens an increasingly important resource for us and wildlife.
Changes that will help to save the planet can be made when it comes to maintaining your garden:
Plant Life
A sedum roof provides a natural habitat for wildlife, replacing greenery that was disrupted by the installation of the garden office. It encourages wildlife into the garden and provides a habitat for them as well as adding colour in to the garden with the blooming flowers that it can display. In addition to this it can keep heat within your garden office during the winter and stop your garden building from soaking up heat in the summer. This reduces the heating costs and saves resources having less impact on the environment and reducing your carbon footprint.
Materials
Cutting down on the use of pesticides, peat and herbicides that have an impact on the environment, the reduction in chemical use on our gardens will make it more eco-friendly. Cutting back on regular fertiliser and using organic materials instead so that we are nourishing the soil and reducing the amount of chemicals being pumped in to our atmosphere.
Energy
Reducing mowing on your garden can have a positive effect, especially if you have a large garden with a lot of lawn space, reducing on mowing can cut energy use and improve biodiversity.
