Private Hideaway – Garden Rooms

By Steven Willis on 10th January, 2011
The arboreal hideaway, typically epitomised by the makeshift dens and tree-houses of childhood, is a tantalising concept that speaks to our innermost desires of comfort and safety. Encased in the reassuring surround of the structure, amongst the heady scents of nature, time almost stands still and the wider world becomes something that just exists outside the boundaries of that protective shell.
While the carefree days of haphazardly hand-building such a shelter become distant memories as we grow into adulthood, the needs that such a dwelling can fulfil often remain very much alive. Despite not craving the wild imaginative journeys of childhood, most of use could use a place to temporarily get away from the stresses and strains of daily life, and a grown-up incarnation of the tree-house can be found in a garden room.
Garden rooms, thoughtfully positioned in a landscaped setting, are a distinctly separate entity, providing a space that’s entirely of its own. In such a place you can become as separated from the world as you like. Alternatively, you can invite the world inside if you prefer, it’s up to you.
From a visual perspective garden rooms are of course a spectacular advancement from the dens of old, with tumbledown improvisation replaced with dramatic designs, precision-engineered glass and premium contemporary cladding. This material quality, combined with a meticulous build process, results in a building that protects from the elements in every season.
