Personal Space - Owning a Garden Office

By Francesca McGlone on 6th October, 2010
A clean, uncluttered space dedicated to work is an ideal environment in which to focus and organise thoughts that can easily become disordered and fractured amongst the distractions that whirl around a living space.
Paperwork and concentration do not tend to mix well with the flurry of activity produced in the home from family and pets. Music, television blare and personal phone calls can all be banished from the garden office. Spreading work out on the kitchen table or writing while resting precariously on the arm of a chair means spillages and mistakes are more likely to occur, which compromises the quality of work that is generated.
However, a garden office allows an individual time and space to work in complete comfort, instead of encroaching upon the valuable areas within the home. A filing system can be kept, so that organisation can be practised and items associated with work can be contained. Mislaying documents or important work is made less likely in a compact space, as opposed to a larger house, complete with an infinite array of camouflaging possibilities and the potential for items to be disposed along with household material, which almost becomes expected.
A garden office will instantly increase the value of your property, acting as a separate extension to the house. It’s positioning is also useful if a worker wants to indulge in the relaxed environment of their house and its home comforts or spend time with family members during a break. The garden office also ensures that a family member becomes fully focused on events and people within the home, which is a vast improvement on having a family member who is present but not attentive to the needs of others around them.
Working from home often means that an individual can feel stir crazy, anchored to the house, without a change of scene, while they watch others leave and return. The sense of relief and happiness that occurs when returning home after a hard day is sacrificed when the home environment exists as a base for work. The danger is that household chores meld into office work, so that the home becomes dedicated solely to exertion rather than relaxation. However, with a garden office, the end of a long day can be marked with the abandonment of activity at the office doors and the beginning of relaxation on entering the house to a warm welcome.
The garden office also ensures that the inescapable reality of working indoors is negated by an office that welcomes in the liberating effects of nature. The natural setting and its benefits can be replicated inside the office, using indoor plants to enhance well-being and improve air quality, so that the working environment is healthy. Office plants are available in a variety of sizes, from roof sweeping plants to desk sized trinkets that are available in a range of pretty pots. A variety of botanical life adds to the office experience, where the conditions for concentration are optimised, so the home and family have room to thrive.
