No Time to Waste Commuting, Invest In a Garden Office

By Emma Heaton on 6th December, 2011
Commuting to work takes up a considerable amount of your time and money. Analysis at the official Office for National Statistics found that the average worker spends nearly 200 hours a year commuting to work and can be even longer if you work in the city. London workers have the longest commuting time, spending just under 280 hours getting to work and back, meaning around 37 minutes per journey each way into London city centre. The East and South East of England spend on average over 200 hours a year on the long commute; however Northern Ireland and Wales had the shortest commute spending in the region of 160-170 hours per year commuting.
Around 75% of the population take less than 30 minutes getting into work at night and in the morning, however when London workers are looked at that figure drops right down to around 44%. However the workers with longer commutes in London are earning more money than those with a smaller commute, workers travelling over an hour to get to work are earning almost double an hour what those are earning with a short journey to work according to the National Statistics.
Peak times on the roads and public transport increase the length of the commute. Employees are being encouraged to help workers by being more flexible with working hours and giving staff options to cut out an unnecessary commute. Next year with the London Olympics causing a serious amount of congestion in all aspects of travel, it will be the ideal opportunity to implement smarter working solutions like increasing the amount of people working from home.
