Improve your Winter Garden Office with Hardy Container Plants

By Emma Heaton on 15th November, 2011
Making a statement in your garden with large and colourful flowers can often be difficult in winter when the frost strips all the plants and tress of their greenery and blossoming beauty. A snow-topped winter garden can be a feature on its own, however some colour in the garden is always a necessity to lighten the mood and make the day ahead feel more positive, especially if your office is at the bottom of your garden.
The way to do this is to plant hardy and colourful foliage in containers and place them in sheltered areas away from the eye of the frost. Additional protection can be gained by fastening bubble wrap around the container in bad weather conditions to stop the roots from damaging with the plummeting temperatures. Trying to start with a larger plant is also important, as the cold months stunt the growth of plants taking much longer to reach their potential. There is a range of shrubs, herbaceous plants, bedding and bulbs to choose from during the winter that can stand the chill and battle through the hardness of winter.
Some suitable plants for the adverse weather:
Winter Bedding Plants - Cyclamen, winter-flowering pansy, viola, primula and polyanthus will flower irregularly during mild spells in winter. They also flower in spring but add the much needed colour when they do flower in the winter.
Evergreen Shrubs – They keep their colour throughout winter and make the garden look more alive. They require little maintenance and are hardy against the conditions. One of the more popular evergreen shrubs that can climb up walls and structures within your garden is Ivy. This would be the perfect splash of colour during the winter around your garden office; it would also help the man-mad structure to blend with the natural background.
Hardy Evergreen Ferns – Common polypody and soft shield fern add greenery to your garden and are durable in the winter. They are a small reminder of the festive season and combined with the winter scenery will give a beautiful view out of your garden office window.
Making sure that you look after these plants during the winter, keeping them well protected and in sheltered areas of the garden, will mean that they will reach their full potential during the spring and summer months when the temperature heats up, so that they can flower and blossom reaching their full natural beauty.
