Its Easy Being Green

Its Easy Being Green

By Clare Horner on 21st January, 2010

Just look at what you can achieve in your garden……

The potential for a green roofs to contribute to increasing the biodiversity of your local area is well documented. But with increased pressure on green infrastructure through increased housing and commercial development on open spaces our responsibility to reinforce our local habitats for birds and invertebrates is ever more important.

You may be considering a garden building…. you have a well loved potting shed……your garden is lawned with a few shrubs, maybe even a pond. But there is no need to compromise on the 'greening' of your personal space. With a green roof, typically shown as a low maintenance sedum 'mat' rolled over the roof, a low maintenance environment can easily be created.

Green roofs are increasingly installed in city centre locations, for both industrial or commercial developments, but should also be considered in a domestic setting too. But don't limit your imagination, should you opt for an in-situ substrate option then you can consider many planting options (dependant on the orientation of the plot, and your geographical location which may provide climatic constraints).

With the added bonus of elevated views from upper floors your hard work won't go un-noticed. Check out the www.thegreenroofcentre.co.uk as a starting point, where there is loads of information (and inspirational images - see above), and get planning! Your local birds and insects will thank you.
