Great Pacific Garbage Patch Is Worse Than We Thought

By Dawn Kubicek on 20th April, 2010

Yes it is all true - there is at least 1,700 miles of plastic rubbish floating through our ocean which is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Isolated patches have been reported in the past by sailors and fisherman, but now researchers taking a nearly 4 week journey to find the truth say that the plastic rubbish is taking up more space than Texas.

Among the upsetting things seen by the team, living crabs and sea life are amongst it.

Time now will be spent analysing the debris to determine what kinds of plastic are present and how it will affect the wildlife. Some researchers theorise that the plastic could be recovered and turned into fuel.

This story is a prime example how mistreatment of waste and the environment can end up damaging the earth in the future. This is why at Decorated Shed we value all aspects of the environment and show this through our choice of building techniques and resources for our garden buildings. If people do not pick up on this now - who knows what other kinds of stories we will hear in the years to come. When you have the chance to do something about it now, why waste the opportunity.
