Five Reasons You Need a Garden Office

By Steven Willis on 21st June, 2011
1) Boost productivity
Working in an office environment with colleagues can often be a distracting experience. Shutting out noise from phone-calls, conversations, the tip-tap of other keyboards, printers, faxes, mobile phones and the general ambient sounds of the office can be a job in itself, and it certainly doesn’t bode well for clearing your mind and concentrating solely on the task in hand.
A garden office is just for you and your work, in a beautifully serene and focused environment. With no distractions your productivity will increase and you’ll get more out of your work.
2) Cut out the commute
However you commute to work – whether it’s driving, taking public transport or cycling – it’s likely that it takes up a good part of your morning and evening. It’s also likely that it is costly and sometimes stressful. Although many of us may feel immune to the negative aspects of the daily commute, the impact it has on our day is hugely significant.
A garden office, of course, requires a commute that consists of no more than a walk down the path.
3) Be more time-efficient
Removing the commute that book-ends the working day with a garden office frees up time that can be better spent elsewhere. Whether this is having a more relaxed morning routine, waking up later, getting home earlier or spending a little longer at work to get through more jobs, it’s certainly a more efficient use of time than sitting in a car or on a bus.
4) Achieve a better work/life balance
One of the common downsides of working from home is that some people find it hard to switch off. This leads not only to working much longer hours, but also the psychologically nagging feeling that you haven’t left work, even when you’re trying to relax and unwind. Setting up your office in the dining room, spare bedroom or another part of the home tends to worsen this effect, as it’s all too easy to come into contact with work at any point of the day or night. You wouldn’t want to live in your office, but when you’re working like this that is effectively what you’re doing.
Setting your work aside in a dedicated garden office creates a physical boundary between your home and work, clearly ring-fencing which activities are done in which location. When you’re at home, you know it’s time for recreation as everything work-related is away from you, in the garden office. When you’re in the office you can effortlessly switch into work mode.
This healthy work/life balance allows you to get the best out of both worlds.
5) Lower stress levels
Stress is a complex and often misunderstood issue, but it’s a fact that several of the benefits that a garden office brings can relieve many of the causes of stress. Not having enough time, taking on too much, failure to relax, work conflicts and regularly being put in challenging situations are five of the most common triggers of stress – all of which a garden office could realistically take out of your life.
Less stress bodes well for a happier, healthier life both at home and at work.
