Eco-friendly school building completed in Seattle

By Matthew Thompson on 22nd February, 2011

A private educational facility in Seattle is poised to be awarded the first certified living building certificate in the state of Washington. A project undertaken by KMD Architects using green professionals, and the construction company Skanska USA Building to assist them in creating an environmentally friendly environment for the children of the school where they can learn the value and importance of conservation, renewable energy and have a detailed look at urban agriculture.

The new science building was built with the environment instilled into all aspects of the construction. An eco-friendly alternative has been used wherever possible, which sees the school building have an ethnobotanical garden to grow food, cisterns to harvest rainwater, a tropical plant wall to treat grey water, radiant floor heating, natural ventilation, a composting toilet, green moss-mat roof and solar panels. The building has been developed to provide the best and most interactive learning experience for the pupils, and this exceptional eco-friendly environment does that.

There are some similarities which can be seen between The Living Building Science Wing and a Decorated Shed garden office, as both are designed and built with the environment in mind. Our garden office designs are flooded with light and space and the exterior façade give it an incredibly natural feel. Set into the background of your garden, it is the perfect atmosphere in which you can work freely and productively. Investing in a garden office from Decorated Shed invigorates your business by establishing a dynamic and professional atmosphere.
