Commitment to an environment

Commitment to an environment

Gardens, for many of us, represent a rare opportunity to access greenery and natural landscapes on a regular basis. So it's no surprise that gardens are becoming ever more prioritised as more people embrace outdoor living. Of all the decorative, productive and cosmetic additions that we can place in our gardens, the decision to build a garden office is perhaps the clearest commitment to making the most of your garden and shows the powerful pull of the environment itself.

As we've discussed on the Decorated Shed blog before, the garden environment can have a tangible beneficial effect on your mood, productivity and even wellbeing. According to the 'Attention Restoration Theory', the sights and sounds of nature have a direct psychological effect that improves productivity and concentration. As well as stimulating the mind, the theory also shows that natural environments produce a stress-reducing effect.

Thinking about the restorative effects of being in a garden further, the body's circadian rhythm - the internal 'clock' that dictates waking, energy levels and sleep - is largely controlled by exposure to natural light and fresh air. Putting yourself in an environment that has light and air in abundance during the day, for instance a well-lit and spacious garden office, ensures that your body responds with the energy needed for an active and productive day.

So, not only does a garden office bring a peaceful, serene and secluded place to work, its very location can help to improve the conditions in which productivity and efficiency grow.
