Bird watching from a Garden Studio

Bird watching from a Garden Studio

By Francesca McGlone on 8th February, 2011

A garden studio provides a fantastic vantage point to witness the activity of nature. Spring is an especially exciting time to watch birdlife, as adult birds forage for their offspring, nests are built and the sight of baby birds renews optimism.

Whether working or relaxing in a garden studio, a chorus of birdsong holds great therapeutic value that can serve as an unobtrusive soundtrack. The colourful variation that exists in the bird world is delivered straight to your doorstep, so that you can indulge in natural treats that gently induces a state of contemplation, at any given opportunity.

Nest boxes, bird baths and bird feed are all methods that can attract birds directly into your garden, along with foliage that is rich in berries.

February is a great month to spot:-

Chaffinches – This is one of the most common birds in the UK and is very distinctive due to its unusual patterning. As is the case with most birds, the male is much more colourful and eye-catching, sporting a pink breast and rosy cheeks, together with a blue-grey crown and nape, chestnut brown back and flashes of white on its wings. It is a bird that packs colour and detail in to its plumage, separated by different shaped region, which almost acts in the same way as an impressive form of attire. The female is still pretty but is less bold in appearance; an olive-brown back and greenish tail feathers are features that make her recognisable. Its striking colours have also given way to other names, such as ‘White wing’, due to its flash of white feathers and ‘Robinet’ due to its flushed breast, which is very similar to the robin.

The Chaffinch is also associated with a famous ‘rain call’, which is sounded as a repetitive short trill and is thought to foretell rain, just as swallows are thought to forecast the weather, with the heights of their flights. The Chaffinch learns its song, which interestingly produces different regional dialects, just as humans do. The Chaffinches that sing in your garden may produce a different variation of bird song in a differently located garden, but as vocal beauty nonetheless.

Great Tits – These birds are also very distinctive, a black head and neck, prominent white cheeks and a yellow breast, with white wing bars across grey-blue wings adds a kaleidoscope of flittering colour to your garden. It sings in a variety of ways but the most distinctive, is its piercing ‘two syllable’ song which oddly sounds like a bicycle pump. In winter it joins its cousin the blue tit to form roaming flocks that search gardens for food.

Although you will see a variety of birds in your garden this spring, these particular birds will make an impression. The beauty of a garden studio is that you can view these birds, without disturbing their activity, as you conceal yourself in an inanimate structure, birds are less likely to register your movement and you can then enjoy their presence for longer. A garden studio provides large windows you can gaze through as you gain insight into the movements and behaviours of beautiful birds in comfortable surroundings.
