A Window onto Inspiration - Garden Studios

By Steven Willis on 30th September, 2010
What separates a studio from any other workspace? Well, in a traditional sense a studio is a place where an artist or sculptor would work, and the word itself has origins in the Latin "studium" which literally means "diligence", or in a wider sense, the act of studying. These historic details reveal a studio to be a space where creativity can flourish. Coming into the modern day, studios remain very much the choice for arts-based activities.
With this in mind, it’s essential that a studio fulfils certain specific needs, and these can be encapsulated in two broad terms - light and space.
Natural light brings a clarity that encourages productivity. With natural light there also comes an obvious opportunity to see the world immediately outside the window, and what better environment to have a front-row view of than a garden? A garden studio, positioned in the heart of a live and ever-changing landscape, can provide both inspiration and motivation - the essential fuel for productivity.
Space delivers benefits both in physically providing the room to comfortably create work, as well as a sense of freedom that comes with being surrounded by air, free from restrictive encroachment. Again, a well-placed window in a garden studio gives a feeling of openness that lends itself to creativity and expression.
