A Natural Office Design

By Matthew Thompson on 7th September, 2010
For Spanish architect firm Selgas Cano, they took the term ‘going green’ literally when they designed their new office in Madrid. Their long tube-like office is half window, half wall and looks into a forest area with trees, shrubbery and nature at the forefront of the view. This revolutionary office design captures the imagination and would get anyone’s creative juices flowing. However, being surrounded and so close to the beauty of the forest, how much work can the architects get done, before drifting off looking at the beauty they are surrounded by?
The simple design strips the office back down to nature, to the hub of where all buildings first start, and looks as if it was never built, but more found there as part of it’s surrounding. Working in an office that is so close to nature, it looks part of it, can only provoke innovation. The inventiveness of this design shows an office being designed around nature, rather than nature being impeded on.
Simplicity is the key here as the office is a tube sunken into the ground, using the age old technique of using earth’s natural heat for insulation. The design brings a contemporary spin on office location and what is key to the success is just how in touch with its surroundings this office is. An office this close to nature’s floor will definitely give workers a different perspective on their surroundings. Maybe, even the thought of working in an office this unique is enough motivation to get out of bed on a morning.
A garden office from Decorated Shed is an inspiring place to work. Light, spacious and modern, its design allows you to indulge in the ever-changing sights of your garden whilst also being green at the same time. The boundaries of inside to outside are seamless, similar to that of the Selgas Cano design, due to the tri-fold glass doors which open fully and provide you with a work space that boasts freedom and imagination. An office design that benefits the environment and sparks imagination should always be aspired to.
