A Guide to Sustainable Gardening – Decoration

By Andrew Tweddle on 19th December, 2011

As well as choosing plants and flowers to go in our garden, we will often include a number of pieces of decoration to allow us to enjoy it even more. This can include decking, pathways, furniture, plant pots and more. However, if you are trying to make your garden environmentally friendly and sustainable, you should use these simple rules to ensure any decoration in your garden follows your eco-friendly philosophy:

Plant Pots

Plant pots are the most common kind of decoration in any garden, and offer a way to show off your plants and flowers, even if you don’t have a large amount of space. If you use plastic plant pots, you can readily find recycled ones from garden centres, which are more environmentally-friendly than other options. Also, you can simply reuse items from around your home if you’re not overly concerned with looks. Buckets, paint pots and more can all be used to contain plants, just remember to put holes in the bottom to allow water to drain.

Garden Furnishings

Garden furnishings, such as seating or sculptures, are perhaps the most personalised items you are likely to find in a person’s garden, with the choice reflecting the owner’s style and taste. However, you can still find items that are both environmentally friendly and stylish. There are many choices for sustainable pieces, but scrap-metal sculptures are examples of popular choices. Scrap-metal sculptures are both very striking and surprisingly beautiful when juxtaposed against the natural surroundings of a garden.

Flooring and Paving

To make your garden more accessible and useable, you can put down paving slabs or wooden decking. Decorated Shed garden offices can include external decking as part of your bespoke investment. The decking is a perfect visual accompaniment to any garden office, and is ethically sourced to ensure it is made from sustainable materials. Paving is also useful, allowing you to create paths in your garden. Again, you should try to ensure your paving is from a sustainable source.

Do it Yourself

Scouring garden centres for sustainable garden decoration can sometimes seem like a fruitless task, as it can often be hard to find out the original source of the materials in any given item. Sometimes the easiest option is to make furniture and decoration yourself. Always ensure you take appropriate safety precautions when using any potentially-dangerous tools. Creating your own piece of furniture or decoration can also be a very rewarding process.

Decorating your garden in a sustainable way takes some thought and planning, but is definitely possible, even for those of use on a strict budget. Decorated Shed garden offices will also add to this eco-friendly process, because they are made form sustainable materials that which are ethically sourced. They also have excellent insulating properties, and require very little heating or cooling, which will benefit both the environment and your energy costs.
