Sustainable school buildings

By Steven Willis on 27th July, 2010
Sustainable building methods are a great way to demonstrate environmentally-friendly principles to children and young people. While many green innovations like energy efficient insulation and panelling are somewhat 'behind the scenes', some techniques, such as sedum or green-planted roofing, are unmissably visual with their benefits plain to see. These types of sustainable solutions are thought-provoking to youngsters, and demonstrate the direct relationship between the building and the environment it inhabits.
More hi-tech sustainable solutions, such as renewable energy in the way of solar panels or micro wind turbines, have a distinct 'wonder' value that sparks scientific intrigue. Again, the presence of environmentally-friendly technology shows a child the tangible connection between human activities and their impacts on the world.
Green developments in schools show pupils and students the choices that exist when creating buildings, and bring the topic of the environment to life in a uniquely first-hand way.
As a result, working in such a space on a daily basis can be an inspirational experience.
