Small living inside a stylish Norwegian box

By Dawn Kubicek on 7th September, 2010
When it comes to small spaces and living, we are not the only ones who have come to realise its potential. A Norway based architecture firm, Rintala Eggertsson Architecture have designed and built a Boxhome - literally! It measures 19 sq metres and has all of a home’s accessories and appliances for everyday life. Rintala, states that she felt the need to move away from larger homes that many Norwegians have wanted in the past to focus on the things needed inside a home, proving that larger spaces are not essential. This micro home includes a kitchen, living room, bathroom and 4 bedrooms!
The Boxhome was initially designed to minimize energy needs for lighting and especially heating, which is necessary in the colder climate of Norway. A timber frame holds the structure together and is insulated with glass and wool. A ladder is situated in the middle of the build acting as stairs. Rintala Eggertsson built the micro home back in 2007 to show that smaller homes could have a considerable economical and environmental benefit to the home owner. The project focused on the quality of space, the use of materials and light and designing a simple home that could be used as a retreat from the surrounding city.
The Garden Office and Curved Lodge are two buildings out of Decorated Shed’s range which also show that innovative design can be carried out on any sized building. These buildings can range from only 2.5m x 3m but the space is used to the buildings potential, especially the Curved Lodge with a curved roof that enhances the internal space. You do not need a large extension or home to create a beautiful space inside and out, some of the smallest builds have been Decorated Shed’s best. We can help you with lighting and interior design to help you maximise your space making the most out of your garden building no matter what the size, just like the Boxhome where innovative design shows how small spaces are beautiful structures.
Decorated Shed’s garden buildings are the perfect solution when extra space is needed. They can be adapted to suit your needs and some of the features include; kitchens, bathrooms and wood burning stoves allowing you to create a micro home, somewhere for guests to stay or a office no matter how large or small your garden is.
