Miniature Manoeuvre

Miniature Manoeuvre

By Francesca McGlone on 6th August, 2010

Over time the shift from grand-scale to a humbler, more compact scale seems to be taking place. For instance the cumbersome grandfather clock may now carry an antique charm, but the development of the more transportable carriage clock, which condensed the time piece into a practical design, whilst retaining an ornate appeal served as an advanced solution. However, the evolvement of the wrist watch in its various flattened and bracelet forms presented both a decorative display and a purposeful mechanism. The bold statements that could be made with exorbitant architecture has now been replaced by an almost revolt against grandeur, where compact designs make bold statements and scream modernity and style.

As existing designs are altered and sliced into new small scale versions of their former selves, they break the mould and threaten the foundations of fixed attitudes. The mini skirt is a direct example of reducing a hem line, while increasing sex appeal, which has a dramatic affect upon female sexuality and society. Sometimes less is more. The idea that something small can have a wide reaching influence is seen the nineteen sixties launch of the iconic mini car, which was developed due to a fuel shortage in the United Kingdom, which led to a slump in the sales of large cars. It became popular because of it masterful engineering and characterful design, purchased by celebrities and therefore fixed with a permanent fashion tag. The desire to adorn compact objects is also strong, as their cute appeal undeniably dominant. The racing stripes and union jack roof became synonymous with the mini, doubling as an advert for artistic expression upon a distinct design that inherently instils pride and affection. By reducing space, enthusiasm is enlarged, as a new experience is carved as an object is approached from a different perspective and with a different set of expectations.

Jumping forward in time, mobile phones continue to shrink in dimension, with every smaller model generating more appeal. Other cars such as the smart car and other city cars are known for their ease of use and economic efficiency and easier parking. Small spaces are inherently a product of considered design, where time and brain power are poured into the aesthetics and formation of a product, leading to an instant impression, as it defies expectations and breaks free from conformity. Small products are also energy efficient. Decorated Shed garden buildings also work on the same premise, whereby their compact size works to reduce energy output, as well as being fitted with energy efficient measures such as triple glazed windows and high performance roofing systems to name a few. Decorated Shed garden buildings are an extension of the new compact lifestyle, where everything is to hand. Compact garden buildings actually create extra space but are easily integrated into an existing garden environment. As a product becomes more accommodating, its ability to make an impact without creating an overbearing presence is made possible.
