Legendary recording studios reborn as eco-building

By Steven Willis on 11th October, 2010

California’s Cherokee Recording Studio building has been reborn as an innovative residential and retail space, reports Iconeye.com.

The building, which contains twelve lofts, a floor of retail units, underground parking and an eco-friendly roof garden, has been designed and developed to impeccable environmental standards, and is in fact the first LEED Platinum Certified mixed-use building in the south of the state. Featuring a novel perforated aluminium exterior made up of movable panels, the appearance of the Pugh and Scarpa building changes depending on how the inhabitants decide to configure their screens on a daily basis.

The studios were frequented by several major name musicians in the 1970’s, including David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra. Although the building is now boldly existing as a loft apartment and retail space, there is a tip of the cap to the musical heritage in the 4th floor home recording studio.
