Green benefits appeal to Canadians

By Steven Willis on 8th April, 2010

A study of homeowners in the Canadian province of Alberta has found that some 73% would be happy to pay more for environmentally-friendly attributes in their property. An impressive 23% of Albertans have already carried out an eco-upgrade on their houses, with a further 26% expressing an interest in doing so.

Compared to last week's article on the willingness of US rental tenants to pay a premium for green features (42% would be prepared to pay more), the statistics coming out of Alberta represent a more accepting attitude to the concept.

"This is the third year that Canadians have told us that they will pay more for a home with environmentally-friendly features and, as more and more homes are being built with green features included, the housing industry is making it easier for home buyers to find environmentally-friendly options," said Chris Wisniewski from TD Canada Trust.
