Energy Star label to be strengthened

By Steven Willis on 19th April, 2010

The renowned Energy Star rating for electronic appliances is to be strengthened following an announcement by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE). The move will see the most popular product types - including freezers, washing machines and air conditioning units - undergo a new round of stringent tests to ensure high compliance.

As well as the testing process, new products aiming to achieve the Energy Star accreditation will be required to meet energy efficiency criteria in approved laboratories and provide evidence of ongoing compliance over time.

Energy Star already has a strong track record in the US, with energy savings in 2009 from labelled products avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual output of 30 million cars, saving $17bn on bills. The label is found on products from computers and televisions to windows and doors, and has become synonymous with energy efficient consumer goods in the US and around the world. The use of the accreditation on products is strictly monitored, and thirty-five companies have been cited for non-compliance in 2010 alone.

The European-based TCO certification integrated the Energy Star criteria in 2003, with the inclusion of third-party testing requirements for any product looking to achieve the label, therefore the EU offering is already compliant with the new US demands.

"Energy efficiency is more important than ever to American families. As our economy gets back on its feet, Energy Star is an easy way for consumers to save money and help fight climate change," said Gina McCarthy from the Office of Air and Radiation at the EPA.

"Consumers have long trusted the Energy Star brand for products that will save them energy and save them money," said Cathy Zoi, DOE Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. "The steps we're taking now will further strengthen and improve the program, building on the results that consumers have come to expect."
