Efficient Confetti

By Francesca McGlone on 28th July, 2010
Swapping the traditional extravagance of a white wedding for a green, economical occasion may not seem like an immediately attractive decision. However, couples are simultaneously marking a commitment to each other with a commitment to environmental conservation, symbolising the longevity of their union through the sustainable materials and manner in which they organise the occasion. The impressive luxury that is usually liberally applied is replaced by intriguing solutions that infuse the day with ingenuity. Conversation pieces are also a product of sustainable alternatives that include the use of plates made from sugar cane and cutlery from potato starch. An already jovial atmosphere is accentuated by the introduction of distinctive elements.
To start a union with the knowledge that needless environmental damage is minimised seems to establish a loyal affinity, which seems to be a suitable occasion in which loyalty and affinity are expressed and celebrated. The respect that is also shown towards the environment is also a key pillar in matrimony, which is used to support a worthwhile cause. The rejuvenating feeling that comes with the knowledge that forests and green spaces remain untouched almost provides a surge of positive energy to the ceremony. Other simple but economical ideas include booking accommodation nearer to home, melting down old gold to reform wedding rings in a personal touch that will always inspire interest and serve as a permanent testament to considerate alternatives. The main attraction of the ceremony, the bride's dress can be recycled in a sentimental manner by wearing her mother's or grandmother's wedding dress. The bride can also ensure that she wears chemical-free make-up, equalling a look that has not scarred the environment and is blemish free, so to speak.
Other green solutions extend to the sourcing of flowers, which are usually the main decoration of choice. Ensuring that flowers are grown locally will minimise travel, while the petals used in confetti should also be locally sourced. The litter of petals will also bio-degrade compared to the paper counterparts. As paper also makes up various aspects of the day, ranging from invitations and place cards to thank-you cards and wrapping paper; recycled materials should be used and recycled further rather than thrown away.
To minimise travel, venues for both the ceremony and honey-moon should remain local, allowing convenience for family and friends and the ease of organisation. Every aspect of a wedding, no matter how big or small can be transform into eco-friendly replacements. Details such as the material that swathes a marquee can be a natural canvas, while the posts that hold the structure can be made of sustainable materials. The idea that an ambiance can only be created with traditional lighting is a misconception, as eco-friendly lighting produces the same effect. Other sources of light that remain constant and obligatory come in the form of illuminated exit signs. There light emission can be replaced by photo luminescent technology that is still effective but less environmentally damaging.
With websites and books dedicated to the subject of eco-friendly weddings it seems that the possibilities for green alternatives are endlessly creative. The traditions of indulgent weddings are not immune from the green bug that seems to have enraptured many. By successfully applying green concepts to a sacred and cherished day, the broadened and accommodating appeal of eco-friendly alternatives is demonstrated along with the softening of scepticism.
