Architects build small spaces - V&A museum London

Architects build small spaces - V&A museum London

By Dawn Kubicek on 2nd August, 2010

Tiny house living is a subject we touched on in previous months and how the small living craze has been taken over by American citizens.
An interesting exhibition is on at the V&A this summer from 15th June - 30th August (free admission) where 19 international architects have been asked to explore the power of small spaces. Submitting their proposals 7 have been chosen and will be constructed full scale. The buildings that have been created follow the themes play, work and performance and will be in the exhibition at full scale throughout the museum.

Small spaces can push the boundaries and possibilities of creative practice, being the motive of the exhibition. I believe this is the point Americans were getting across with their small homes - you do not need a big room or house to decorate it with style inside and out.

"Bespoke structures encourage a heightened sensitivity to materials, texture and proportion. A renewed clarity emerges; allowing architects a freedom of expression that often struggles to survive in larger building projects." V&A 2010

Decorated Shed design and build smaller structures, promoting the fact that smaller buildings can still carry out a lot of architectural style with use of worldwide sourced materials for quality and efficiency. Our bespoke building option allows an open mind to create a individual garden studio or garden office for each of our clients. Beautiful Western Red Cedar cladding along with unique architectural style gives our builds a unique character and distinction from other garden building companies.

Pictured above is the work of Danny Wicke, an instructor from Rural Studio University - Alabama. Danny installed the Woodshed's light vine. The internal lighting is striking, but is made to appear as a lantern when people walk into a dimly-lit room, contrasting with the other small architecture builds. A perfect example of what lighting can do to a small space, and can even be the reason for a buildings character and style.
