Americans back "eco-apartments"

By Steven Willis on 1st April, 2010

A massive 86% of Americans who rent their properties would prefer a place with sustainable and environmentally-friendly features, according to the results of a survey published this week.

The study by Rent.com also found that while the majority would like the green credibility of an eco-friendly apartment, just 42% would be willing to pay a premium for the chance to do so. Interesting, some 13% of respondents claimed they would pay more than $100 a month extra for a green pad.

Just 11% said that living in a rented property with eco-friendly attributes was an 'absolute necessity'.

The results of the study again highlight the fact that while the overall aims of the eco movement are becoming increasingly ingrained in the hearts and minds of the consumer, when it comes to the producing the financial outlay required to achieve them, the inclination is lessened.
