A small space to experience a beautiful place

A small space to experience a beautiful place

Beach huts - which have been the focus of the Decorated Shed blog this week - are the perfect example of creating a building in the heart of a desirable environment, specifically for the purpose of enjoying that place on a regular basis.

Small buildings in places of scenic environmental beauty are unsurprisingly common. Picturesque lakes, woodlands, valleys and mountains the world over are dotted with structural edifices, all indicating the fact that, at one time or another, people made the decision to get closer to nature. The similarities of these buildings - whether they're lakeside houses, woodland cabins, mountain lodges or beach huts - is that they're almost always small.

The diminutive dimensions of such buildings is an acknowledgement of a number of things; an attempt to minimise the impact on the landscape in which the building is positioned; accepting the real space that is 'needed' to comfortably exist there; and, finally emphasising that the beauty and attraction of the environment itself is the focus of the whole exercise, and that the building is merely the route to experiencing it. The building is secondary to the location.

The creation of a building in one of these environments is a commitment to the appeal of the place itself, a choice to become part of it through proximity.
